The M&I Mariners defeated the KC Bagel Royals 14-13 Monday night at Saratoga Park.
The Royals exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning behind doubles by Matt Arndt, Ben Bartletti, and Drew Schwarz; and singles by Matt Winter and Luc Berner.
The Mariners answered with a single tally in their half of the first, before both teams were held scoreless in the second.
After extending their lead to 8-1, the Royals were tagged for four runs in the bottom of the third.
A Jake Husnick home run, Brian Cueves-Ruiz triple and Sam Brettingen two out single were the big blows for the Mariners in the inning.
Back-to-back-to-back singles by Berner, Arndt, and Winter helped the Royals regain the lead 10-5 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
However; six consecutive walks, Cueves-Ruiz’ second triple, and singles by Brettingen, Aaron Wegter, and Andrew Turunen helped the Mariners surge to a 14-10 lead.
The Mariners were able to hold on down the stretch, despite allowing the Royals two runs in the fifth, and a single score in the six.
For the Mariners, Cueves-Ruiz, Brettingen, and Turunen had multiple hit games.
Arndt, Winter and Berner all collected three hits for the Royals.
Playoffs for the Minor league teams begin Monday, when the Brewers take on the Red Sox at 4:30 p.m. The late game finds the Mariners versus the Royals, their battle is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
The championship game will take place Wednesday at 6 p.m.
All games are slated for Little League Park.
