Antigo school board to eye data on proposed wood-fired heating system June 22, 2009 The Antigo school board may have more information available on a potential project to add a wood-fired heating system to the high school when it convenes Tuesday.
The board will meet for its regular June session with a fairly light agenda, at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
At a special meeting earlier this month, the board voted to apply for non-interest bonds available through the Department of Public Instruction for the possible construction of a wood-fired boiler for the high school.
The application does not commit the district, but action was necessary at that time in order to meet deadlines and potentially receive up to $1 million in Qualified Zone Academy Bonds.
The district is one of nine statewide that is in the midst of a planning process to determine the feasibility of heating the high school and aquatic center using biomass, usually wood chips or tree tops not suitable for other uses, with a potential $1 million price tag.
The district is continuing to explore cost and funding options, including the possibility of substantial grants. More concrete numbers on construction costs and potential savings are expected to be available Tuesday night.
In other matters, the board will discuss filling teaching positions using dollars available through the federal stimulus plan.
Possibilities, which were also discussed at the special board meeting earlier this month, include adding a reading specialist at the Middle School, increasing guidance counseling services, and returning a technology education teacher to the Middle School, an area that was cut in the past due to budget constraints.
The board will also:
—receive an update on the state budget.
—discuss whether to replace a Middle School custodian.
—act on bids for the construction class house built by students.
—look at its agreement with Children’s Service Society for the family resource center.
—and consider taking action on demolishing the old bathroom and concession stand at Schofield Stadium. The stand and restrooms have been replaced through the efforts of the Antigo Gridiron Club.
