May 27, 1934
Antigo was trapped in the midst of a heat wave as temperatures soared to 84 degrees and even higher readings are anticipated as the week wears on.
Pictures of the Antigo High School class of 1934 are shown today in the Daily Journal. Among the people on the list are George Mantor, Jack Dakin, James Cherf, Lyman Diercks, Virginia Edee, Donald Griffiths, Orrin Heinrich and James Van de Hey, just to name a few.
Plans for the Memorial Day observance tomorrow are now complete, starting with the Hudson Street bridge program in the memory of fallen sailors. The entire program from the bridge to the cemetery is printed in the paper today.
While most of the Antigo area hot spots have bands for dancing tonight, the high school alumni will hold its annual spring dance on Thursday with the Jack Cameron orchestra performing.
Tonight Al Wagner’s crew is playing for the grand-reopening of the High Point at Summit Lake, tomorrow Vogel’s has the famed Wally Beau and his musicians performing on Decoration Day and Ruby’s Place south of town will have the radio stars, the Mississippi Show Boat Four, playing throughout the day.

Pictures are published today of the graduating class from Langlade County Teachers College. (I’m sure I know more, but Rachel Perry and Bill Falk are the sure things.)
The Home Theater is showing the motion picture, “A Night to Remember,” about the sinking of the great liner, The Titanic. The ad claims that the show depicts “as it really happened.”
There was a real crowd at the Reynolds Sugar Bush Sunday with estimates as high as 5,000 on the grounds. Barbara Haslow, the Wisconsin Alice in Dairyland, was on hand to present awards and Cousin Fuzzy and His Cousins performed music under one of the big tents.
A hearing will be held tonight at the Lily School on the future affiliation of the facility. It is now joined with Pickerel but there is a move to consolidate with the Antigo system.
Antigo High School golfers posted an 8-4 contest over Rhinelander at the northern course on Saturday. Medalist was Tom Conrad, a freshman for the local squad. He posted a 40-43.

May 27, 1984
News to the north reports the death of Woodward W. Kerr III, the acting district attorney for Forest County, who yesterday was found near his Crandon home with a gunshot wound to the head. Kerr had filled the slot for only a short time, filling in for Kevin J. Kelley who was away on medical leave. With an autopsy set for later today, officials have not yet ruled if the death was a homcide, suicide or accidental.
Fred Waldburger, a rural Gleason dairy farmer, has thrown in his hat for the 35th Assembly seat. Incumbent Sheehan Donoghue of Merrill has declared her intention to not seek re-election and Waldburger is one of handful of hopeful candidates.
Although the school year is nearly complete, photos today feature the students at Antigo Junior High who earned academic achievement awards for the third quarter of classes. Among the freshman honorees were Paula Bostwick, Susan Draeger, Carrie Kubacki, David West, Michelle Hoerman, Paul Knapp, Chris Reif, Eric Selmak and Patty Witman, to name a few.
The gals on the Red Robin track and field team are doing a little celebrating today. Under the guidance of coach Ron Dillahunt, Antigo repeated as the regional track champion and qualified six individuals and all three of its relay teams for the next level. The coach’s daughter, Cherie, won three of the 13 events on her own and will join Teri Bilse and Amy Arndt with first place performances.
Antigo’s lads finished third in the regional race held at Rhinelander and eight of its members advanced to sectional competition. Perhaps Antigo’s best chance in earning a trip to state, Jim Kubiak won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Les Cigel’s AllCar baseball crew will be back at Kretz Brothers Memorial Park tonight to kick off its season. The roster features a slate of familiar names, among them pitchers John Boyle, Mike Simon, Todd Zuelzke, Justin Szews, Paul Kristoff and Greg Below. Including coach Dean Noskowiak, other local names are Mike Jaje, Brian Hoppe, Mike and Pat McCann, Luke Kolz, Darrin Spiegl and Scott Farmer, to name a few.
On the local golf scene, coach Dennis O’Neil’s Elcho linksters won their meet at the Nicolet Country Club yesterday. On the squad are Jake Rife, Rick Reynolds, Jeremy White, Jon Irish and Ken Klima.
