Illegal held in death of Wausau teen May 13, 2009 A 22-year-old restaurant worker is being held in the killing of a high school student at her Wausau apartment.
Raul Ponce-Rocha was charged Tuesday with first-degree intentional homicide in the May 2 death of 18-year-old Breanna Schneller.
Marathon County Assistant District Attorney Theresa Merriwether said Ponce-Rocha is expected in court sometime today. Authorities said he is an illegal immigrant and is being held by federal immigration authorities in Dodge County.
Police Chief Jeff Hardel said Schneller was beaten and stabbed multiple times. He said gloves with the suspect’s DNA were among evidence in a bag recovered from a dumpster outside the restaurant where Ponce-Rocha worked with Schneller’s fiancee and brother.
Ponce-Rocha has been held since May 6, four days after the slaying at the apartment Schneller shared with her fiance and his brother.
The Wausau Herald reported today that preliminary DNA results received Monday from the State Crime Laboratory linked Ponce-Rocha to the death scene.
The investigation into the death and motive for the killing continues.
