The Spirit helicopter prepared to move a young swimmer Sunday afternoon.

Youngster treated for accident at swim center

March 16, 2009

A child remains in critical condition at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield, a day after nearly drowning at Antigo’s Clara R. McKenna Aquatic Center.

The two-year-old boy, whose name hasn’t been released at the request of his family, was pulled from the waters of the shallow, warm-water pool shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday.

According to the investigation report, the child was in obvious distress and lifeguards on the scene immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which they continued until emergency medical personnel arrived a few moments later.

The child was transported to Langlade Hospital and shortly afterwards taken by the Flight for Life medical helicopter.

According to the incident report, the child had gone to the pool with several other family members and friends of various ages for a celebration. The adult with the children told officers that “he turned his back for just a moment,” the report states, and explained that the toddler was being supervised by teen-agers attending the party.

The child was pulled from the water near the hot tub area, in about three feet of water.

The report indicates that there were three lifeguards involved in the rescue, and Police Capt. Eric Roller commended them for their efforts.

“From the reports, they did an excellent job on the scene and handled everything in a textbook fashion,” Roller said. “They handled a difficult situation under intense pressure.”

Antigo School District Administrator Roxann Bornemann said the police, Langlade County Sheriff’s Department and lifeguards worked together to provide coordinated emergency response.

“Our concerns and prayers are for the child, his parents and family at this time,” Bornemann said.

Counselors from the high school as well as the Langlade Health Care Center are offering assistance to aquatic center employees and the responding emergency medical technicians.
