Servco FS is continuing work on a massive fertilizer storage building, which will be six stories tall when completed. The scale of the building can be understood by looking at the size of the work crew, and the one-story structure being constructed on the left side of the photograph.

Massive Servco FS building takes shape

Dec. 9, 2008

One of Antigo’s more unique—and hidden—building projects is quietly rising from the rubble of the former Langlade Lumber Company boiler house.

Servco FS, which owns the complex that long-ago was home to the company and its massive boiler house, is in the midst of constructing a massive fertilizer storage building, one of three projects underway at the sight.

In his monthly report to the Antigo Common Council, Building Inspector-Assessor Jerry Wilhelm detailed a number of commercial projects underway, including the truly massive FS structure.

The building will be 26,000 square feet in area and almost 60 feet tall—six stories—when completed. Work is well underway, with the next step involving the placement of the massive laminated beams that will support the roof, Wilhelm said.

FS is also reconstructing a pole storage building that was moved in pieces from the Holiday Inn express site and is replacing the Langlade Lumber Company boiler plant building that was recently razed.

“The cold weather is not helping the progress of any of these buildings,” Wilhelm said.

The former Kmart plaza remains a hub of activity, despite the slowdown in the national economy.

Work is continuing on the new stand-alone Subway Restaurant while, within the complex, preparations are being made for the new Peebles apparel store that will be located just east of the newly-opened Sears store.

“Peebles has just received state plan approval and they are waiting on final documents before they begin work,” Wilhelm said. “They have been making preparations for construction for a while.”

Work is also continuing on the plaza’s east end, where Dollar Tree will be relocating into the space previously occupied by Walgreen’s.

“The facade of the building is also being worked on while the wait continued for Peebles,” Wilhelm said. “Negotiations are still in progress with the other store which may located to the west of Sears but there is nothing firm on that subject yet. Parking lot improvements will be undertaken next year.”

Also on the north side, mechanical work should be completed on the Holiday Inn Express soon, Wilhelm said. The outside finish work is completed. Insulation, drywalling and other finish work are the next steps.

Other projects underway, or awaiting spring, include:

—the bandstand at City Park, which is essentially complete except for fill and grading which will be done in spring.

—the park shelter next to Merit Gear, which is complete.

—the Kentucky Fried Chicken project across from the fairgrounds, which Wilhelm said remains on hold.

—and a new storage building being constructed by Verne Losser on South Dorr Street. Concrete is in place and the building parts on site.

In other building news, Wilhelm said the Strike Zone Lanes structure downtown was successfully removed without any damage to the next-door business, which shared a wall.

“Kautza Excavating did a superb job of dismantling the building while facing some challenges with a common wall and a neighbor who was fearful his building would also be demolished,” Wilhelm said.
