Antigo harriers finish season at state meet, all to return in 2008 Oct. 29, 2007 For the Antigo High School cross country team, the season ended Saturday the Ridges in Wisconsin Rapids, where two of the Red Robins four WIAA qualifiers nearly cracked the top 100.
None did, but with all four—Nicole Blahnik, Erik Artymiuk, Lauren Boodry and Mitch Easker—all returning next season, 2008 should shape up to be one of the team’s best seasons.
“All four ran well and represented the Antigo cross country team very well,” Red Robin coach Kevin Kubacki noted afterward.
“It was a beautiful day for racing, but once again, the course was difficult. All four heeded my advice to start conservative, but all four found themselves too far back at the mile to make a run at something better. It was a learning experience for everyone.”
Under sunny, somewhat windy conditions, Artymiuk brought back the best finish. Coming in at 17:26 in the boys’ 5,000 meter race, he was 101st among a field of 189 boys.
Boodry took 102nd out of 190 females, with a mark of 16:12 in the 4,000-meter race.
“Our times and placements were respectable due to the fact that it was our first time at the Ridges,” Kubacki added.
“All four were just off the top half, which was our goal. With such a tough sectional, all four had to run their best races just to get to the state meet.”
Blahnik’s time of 16:17 earned her 111th place, while Easker came in 117th, in 17:26.
“I told them, the bottom line is that we made it to state,” Kubacki emphasized.
“So many other runners will never get the chance. All four have some valuable experience. And with some hard work and a little luck, all four could be back next year.”
Madison’s LaFollete High School easily out-paced runner-up Stevens Point, scoring 44 points compared to the Panthers’ 139.
Elliot Krause, a senior from Appleton North was boys champion, with a time of 15:37.
Arrowhead scored 92 points to squeak past second-place Whitefish Bay, which scored 95, and capture the girls title.
Kimberly senior Kelly Bogard took home the medal after she was timed at 14:41.
“I’m proud of the way my four athletes competed and kept the tradition of state qualifiers alive,” Kubacki concluded.
“It was a great day for Antigo cross country.”
