Record shattered in White Lake's Possum Chase July 6, 2010 A photo finish was in order for the 2010 White Lake Possum Chase as 203 runners took part in the annual 10-kilometer run as the top two finished within a split second of each other.
Sparta’s Abe Wengel and Josh Dedering of Neenah topped the course in 34:44 to claim first overall. Antigo’s Mitch Easker took third with a time of 36:45. All three runners represented men ages 18-29.
Ryne Scopp of Kenosha, a member of the men’s 17 and under group took fourth at 39:06.
Sparta’s David Schmidt representing men ages 30-39 claimed fifth with a time of 39:58.
Rounding out the overall top-10 were Derek Fahrenking of Neenah (40:11), Tom Waidelich of Antigo (40:28), who topped the ages of 40-49 group, Avery Scopp of Kenosha (41:05), Peter Zubella of Appleton (41:29), and Doug Hoppe of Green Bay (41:30).
Gary Peterson of Deerbrook took second in the age class of 50-59, with a time of 50:59, ahead of White Lake’s Dan Betz, who finished in 59:19.
Claiming first place in the 70 and over age group and finishing the course as the eldest runner, 77-year old Kent Schlienger of Pelican Lake set a time of 1:14:48.
Stephanie Tainter of Antigo, representing women age 30-39 was the fastest female and sixth overall with a time of 40:04.
Taylor Webersetzig of West Bend recorded a time of 43:39 and took second in the 17 and under class, ahead of Claire Knaus of Neenah in third at 45:24, Lydia Farenkrug of Neenah (45:24) and Alison Parker of Neenah (45:28) for fourth and fifth respectively.
Middleton’s Cindy Bremser took sixth (45:44), Melissa Mondo of Vadnais Heights, Minn., topped the women’s 18-29 class with a time of 45:52, for the number seven spot, taking eighth was Jessica Meredo of Chicago, Ill. at 46:37.
Antigo’s Sammy Stimac running in the 17 and under class, took ninth at 47:30, while Antigo High School cross country teem mate Mary Prunty claimed the number 10 spot at 47:04.
In the women’s ages 30-39 class, Jennifer Diedrick of Antigo took fourth at 58:24.
Michelle Koss of Bryant easily won the women’s ages 40-49 class by finishing five minutes ahead of her next challenger. Antigo’s Heather McCann was fourth in that age group at 58:24.
Among women ages 50-59, Antigo’s LuAnn Buehler was third, in 1:02:13.
In the one-mile event, Nick Schaefer of New London, competing on the ages 18-to-29 class, broke his own course record of 4:25 with a time of 4:24.5.
Ryan Wagner of White Lake, finished first among runners ages eight-to-10 at 6:40.
Taking fourth overall and first in ages 11-to-13 class, White Lake’s Robert Wagner finished in 5:36, 10 seconds ahead of Colin Koss, of Bryant at 5:46. Polar’s Jake Waters crossed the finish line in just over a minute behind at 6:45.
Christopher Wagner of White Lake nabbed the fifth overall slot and first among males ages 40-49 at 5:43, while White Lake’s Andy Kostelny took second in ages 50 and over at 8:41.
With a time of 6:02, Wabeno’s Shelly Spaude was first among women ages 30-39, ninth overall.
Libby Kostelny of White Lake was first in the 14-17 age group at 7:01, Mary Wagner of White Lake took fourth in the 40-49 women’s class with a time of 15:10, while Barb Wagner representing women ages 50 and older finished in 15:11.
