Despite rain threats, great races held at fairgrounds oval Friday June 26, 2010 The Antigo Stock Car Association is struggling this year with weather-releated problems.
Most weather predicting services were saying that there would be windy and wet storms moving into the Antigo area Friday by about 8 p.m., and then during race time only a few drops of rain appeared. But it was likely enough to scare some race car drivers and fans from making the trip to the Langlade County Fairgrounds Speedway.
But those who did come saw excellent and competitive racing on the half-mile clay oval, still looking to be a little rough in the corners.
In the modified feature Antigo’s Charlie Wild started in first place, but after a series of restarts he lost the lead and mechanical woes forced him to pull off the track before the event ended.
Julie Wedelstadt, of Oconto Falls, won the feature crown followed by Marcus Yarie, Wausau, and third, Mattoon’s Scott Williams.
Sean Thayer took the honors in the truck division followed by Gary Kasparek and Forrest Crandall.
The battle for the lead was fierce in the Fastrack class with A.J. Diemel taking the feature purse followed by Justin Hurt and Dave Fieber.
It was a fast and close race with the lead switching around a number of times, and ended under time limits with a yellow/checkered flag combination.
In the sports modified class, it was Tracy Wasenberg winning the title followed by Travis Vanstraten in second and Matt Oreskovich in third.
“Hot Rod” Snellenberger was the victor in the stock class followed by Mitch Stankowski and Chaz VanOoyen across the line.
It was the first week for the Pro Open Four-Wheeler class, and the riders of the fast quad machines put on quite a show.
Nearly 20 of them lined up for the feature and the racing was fast and close and fans in the stands seemed pleased.
But when the racing was ended the lack of clear identification on the machines made listing the winners for the newspaper impossible.
Racing will return July 2 at 7 p.m. with a slate of events and when they end, a big fireworks show that has become a tradition on the July Fourth weekend.
