Antigo golfers close season at sectionals June 2, 2010 A double bogie on the 18th hole prevented Antigo’s Joe Fronek from getting at least a shot at a state berth Tuesday as the Red Robin golf team saw its 2010 season end in WIAA sectional tournament play.
Only the top two teams from the eight squad field — Eau Claire Memorial and Superior — as well as three additional individual qualifiers advanced to the championship level slated for June 7-8 at Madison’s University Ridge.
Antigo finished in eighth overall.
“As a team, we just couldn't get any kind of flow going, and it is really too bad, because this is a really good group of golfers and they deserved to have a better finish to their season,” coach Steve Fermanich said.
Needing a 78 to earn a shot at a playoff hole and a chance to advance to state, Fronek posted a 7-over-par 79 to close his junior season at Marshfield’s River Edge greens.
Mike Field of Marshfield took the individual title with an even-par 72 (37-35).
As non-members of a state qualifying team, he will join Wausau West’s Jim Schroeder (76) and Hudson’s Jack Holland (78) at the championship level. Holland won the spot after beating teammate Luke Burbach (78) and New Richmond’s Jake Bourassa (78) on a third playoff hole.
“That double bogie may have cost him,” Fermanich said of his junior golfer.
Antigo’s Jordan Mach finished the day with an 88 (40-48) followed by Chad Kools at 90 (44-46). Nick Bolen came in at 93 (47-46) and Mike Shinners posted a 94 (51-43).
“Jordan got off to a good start, but couldn't finish it off,” Fermanich said. “I will miss what he brings to this team.
“Golf is a cruel game at times and today it turned its bad head at us,” he added. “ I will miss my seniors, as they are really great kids. The bulk of our varsity players will all be back next year, so it gives me hope for the upcoming seasons.”
