Lakeland knocks off Red Robin squad in WIAA action June 2, 2010 On a positive note the Antigo baseball team closed out is season with a 13-10 record, an improvement over last season.
Unfortunately it came at the hands of No. 11 seeded Lakeland with a 6-4 loss Tuesday at Kretz Brothers Park in a WIAA regional semi final game.
The No. 6 seeded Robins took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with runs by Jake Tatro (double) and Justin Schroepfer (single) as catcher Cody Schilcher hit a double to send them home.
Antigo extended the margin to 3-1 after three complete innings.
Riley Dahms toed the mound for Antigo lasting the entire outing. Dahms faced 36 Thunderbird batters as he was banged for 12 hits, while giving up six runs, four of them earned.
“He threw a good game,” Antigo coach Bill Greening said. “He pitched well enough to win. Our errors did not help the cause, combine that with leaving runners in scoring position and the game was not ours to be.”
Lakeland utilized the fourth inning to shift momentum in its favor by scoring five runs off of six hits.
Trailing 6-3 in the home half of the fourth, lead off Pete Solin singled his way on base. A subsequent double by Jordan Sorano gave Solin room to head home but the Robins were unable to score after that point in time.
Antigo had opportunities to make up the difference but instead stranded runners on the bags.
Mike Dumask earned the win on the mound for the Thinderbirds.
Schroepfer led the offensive efforts for the Robins hitting 2-for-4 with a double, as did Schilcher. Solin and Sorano each hit 1-for-3, while Tatro and Jared Tomany (double) went 1-for-4. In all Antigo recorded eight hits.
“Overall the team has a lot to be proud of,” Greening said. “They had a good year. We will have a huge gap to fill with seven senior players graduating. It is going to be difficult to say good-bye to them. They are not only good ball players but great guys.”
Closing out their high school career are second baseman Schroepfer, catcher Schilcher, pitcher/shortstop Tomany, pitcher/infielder/outfielder George Monk, infielder/outfielder Garrett Bastle and infielder/pitcher Keagan Marten.
Lakeland will advance on to the regional final game against Ashwaubenon Friday in Ashwaubenon.
