Lakers beat Elcho 13-3 to advance to regional title game

June 2, 2010

Mirroring a finale twice witnessed already this season, the White Lake High School softball team claimed victory over its rival Elcho Hornets Tuesday in a WIAA regional semi-final game at Langlade.

Collecting 10 hits including a triple by senior Magon Holbrook, the Lady Lakers won 13-3 in five innings to advance to the regional championship game Thursday at Wausaukee. A 15-2 winner over Florence, the Rangers will play host to the 5 p.m. matchup.

The victory was White Lake’s third straight over Elcho this season, bringing the squad’s overall record to 14-7.

Coming off three big wins over Phelps, including a 40-20 victory in its regional opener last week, the Hornets concluded the year at 7-11 overall and 6-8 in the Northern Lakes Conference.

“Overall, I am proud of my girls. We had some awesome parent support this year and the girls worked hard all season,” Elcho coach Jamie Krause said on her senior-less squad. “We were a young team and we will lose no one so I’m already looking forward to next year.”

Elcho’s Casey Bloechl, Dani Christian, Ashley Jensen and Kaya Gravitter all had singles in the windy afternoon contest but the Hornets left six runners on the bases and failed to reach home plate in all but the second of the five inning contest.

In turn, White Lake batted well and tallied all of its runs in the first, second and fifth innings.

“Everyone of the girls got hits,” Laker coach Larry Flannery said.

As the team leader, Carlie Klement went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and single. Adding to the hit tally were Nicole Solin, Breanna Grimsic, Elisha Kegley, Hannah Emerson, Abby Heistad, Sara Clark and Brooke Reichert, all with singles, and Holbrook with a triple.

Allowed nine free passes on balls including five in the first inning, White Lake used Reichert’s two-RBI single to earn an early 5-0 advantage.

Elcho got a rally going in the second to cut the gap to 5-3 but it would be the only time its runners would see home plate.

White Lake scored four runs in the bottom of the second and in the fifth, tallied four more to send the Hornets packing for home.

“We had a few errors but Magon (Holbrook) retired the last nine in a row to get the win,” Flannery said.

The senior finished the game with five strike outs. She allowed four hits and three walks.

Elcho used a pair of pitchers. Collecting the only strike out, Dani Christian allowed nine runs on nine walks and seven hits. Bloechl gave up the final four runs.
