Events roll nicely at races here Friday, but yellow flags a glitch May 29, 2010 There was a case of yellow fever at the Langlade County Fairgrounds speedway Friday night.
Yellow caution flags were flying repeatedly during most of the evening with some of the feature events having five of them — and coming to a forced end because of time limits.
When the flag man, who oversaw the action from his track side tower was questioned, his answer was “there’s a full moon.”
And indeed there was. As the racers spun, crashed and lost parts of their machines on the raceway forcing the events to stall, a massive and stunning planting moon was raising southeast of the track. And it was full — or very near full.
It was the second week for the Antigo Stock Car Association’s 2010 events and activities were streamlined and the weather far better than at the opener one week earlier.
With minutes ticking before the curfew, the last of the features were completed.
In the speedy fast track class, Dave Fieber took the checkered in a feature that came to an end without being called by time.
A.J. Diemel was second and Jeff Curtain was third.
In the big IMCA modified class, Pat Zdroik of Eagle River was the feature winner and Scott Williams, of Mattoon, was in the chase taking second. Julie Wedelstadt was third.
When the feature got rolling, there were four laps completed, and the caution flag had already flown four times suggesting the evening’s problems.
Matt Oreskovich of Clintonville took the flag in the sports modified class with a snappy dressed machine and he was followed by the White Lake speedster, Jake Solin and Tacey Wassnberg in third.
Gary Kasperek was the winner in the street stock feature followed by Jan Migas in second and Dennis Kohn taking third.
In the truck division, a favorite with the local crowd, Shawn Thayer was the winner of the feature title followed by Travis Christjohn and Robert Hoffman.
Hot Rod Snellenberger was the winner in the IMCA stock car class trailed by Larry Karcz Jr. and Barry VanStraten.
Off road racing will be held at the fairgrounds facility next weekend and changes to the track will mean a layoff for the Antigo Stock Car Association program on Friday.
