UW-Badger band is coming here, get ready for some real excitement Feb. 6, 2010 For many, it’s the best part of a Badger football Saturday, and it’s coming to Antigo in one week.
The University of Wisconsin Varsity Band, considered by many as the best collegiate marching band, will perform Sunday, Feb. 14 in a 2 p.m. concert at the Sheldon Fieldhouse.
The show is presented by the Antigo Band Boosters and is a true entertainment bargain. Tickets are $8 in advance, available at Antigo Country Store, Lakeside Grocery and Pharmacy and Exclusively Schroeder’s. They will be priced at $10 at the door.
The 300-plus member band is directed by the renowned Professor Mike Leckrone and features the talents of two Antigo High School alumnus, Timothy Blahnik and Jake Immel, both trumpet players.
According to organizers, all that will be missing from the concert will be a few minutes of football.
The band, which thrives on both a fun atmosphere and musical excellence, will perform some favorites from the famous Fifth Quarter, which traditionally concludes every Badger home game, win or lose, rain, snow, sleet or dead of night.
Audience participation is a must. Fans are invited to sing along, and perhaps even do a little polka-ing in the stands, to “Varsity,” “You’ve Said It All,” “Dance Little Bird (Chicken Dance)” “Beer Barrel Polka,” and, of course, “On Wisconsin.”
There will be a few special guests, including Mayor Bill Brandt and Dr. Ted Fox, who spent a portion of his UW-Madison days as a Bucky Badger mascot, along with an appearance by Antigo’s own Red Robin.
The Antigo High School drumline will serve as the opening act, sure to get the crowd fired up. There will also be a 50/50 raffle with tickets priced at $1 each or six of $5, along with concessions at half-time.
Doors will open at 1 p.m. and there will be general admission. Special seating will be available on the floor level for senior citizens and the disabled.
